I sent an email to Microsoft on Monday asking for a status update on my Office 2008 upgrade order. I got an auto-responder message saying that they would respond within one business day. Well, three days later they finally responded with this less-than-helpful reply:

Thank you for your e-mail.

Your order is currently in "pending" status while we await the receipt and/or processing of your proof of purchase materials (product box top and sales receipt). If you have already sent the required materials, note that it can take 4 weeks or more to process them once received, due to the high volume of requests sent to our Buffalo facility. Beyond 4 weeks, you may wish to check any tracking information that may be available for your shipment to us.

If you have not already mailed your proofs of purchase, you would have missed the February 14th postmark deadline for the Super Suite Deal. However, you might still wish to participate in a similar offer, the Office 2008 Technology Guarantee:

Heh. Funny. I forgot about the font smoothing on that machine... you see, the monitor is a weird Dell Ultrasharp that has an LCD panel with a rare pixel configuration. Instead of the subpixels being ordered Red-Green-Blue they are Blue-Green-Red. Since I have ClearType enabled on that machine and configured to compensate for the weird LCD panel, screenshots look strange on "normal" LCD screens.

The only time it becomes an issue is when you use sub-pixel anti-aliasing and that's not something unique to Windows. I've seen NEC monitors that use that kind of LCD panel as well. If you tried to use one on a Mac, you wouldn't even have the option of configuring the pixel order so you'd be double-screwed.

I can't watch Ballmer at all. Can't stand the guy.

I agree with the bully statement... he just seems like the stereotypical dumb, drunk frat boy who only feels better about himself when he can put down or beat up another guy.

Microsoft has finally broken their silence on the Office 2008 shipment delays... not that they've given any real explanation. According the the latest post on the Mac Mojo blog, all Super Suite Deal orders have now shipped. I, personally, received my copy today. According to the order status page, it was supposed to ship via USPS but it arrived via DHL.

It was the Special Media Edition and it came with the same form letter that everyone else seems to have received saying, essentially, that they weren't sure which version I had ordered and that if this was the wrong version, I should call and they would replace it with the other version.

I'm at the FIRST Robotics Regional Championship in Tacoma. Great activity involving lots of interesting people both students and adult volunteers.

Many of the people are from Microsoft and one says he's head of security for Vista. Says Vista is the most secure operating system now. Says Mac is less secure. Says Mac doesn't have a technical advantage, market share is the reason that it hasn't been sucessfully attacked. After all, they just released 47 (or whatever number) fixes in their recent security update.

I told him I'd never heard a credible person make that statement. He seemed offended.
