Ok. Priced my used (but pristine) 85/1.8 (NON D) on eBay. Looks like about $350. So, to REPLACE that good of a lens with a newer one that would even work with the entry-level Nikon DSLRs would be pretty pricey.
My reviewing of this spreadsheet I borrowed/cobbled together says the D7000 might be my best option. It DOES have internal focus motor, so I would not have to replace any of my old glass. Any opinions?

bitten by the DSLR upgrade bug bad. I WILL pull the trigger.
Took my 'kit' to Roberts Camera. NONE Of my lenses will work with today's current generation of Nikon entry-level DSLRs. :(
So, sell all my lenses including my coveted 85mm/1.8 that took the below photos yesterday? AND... AND buy new lenses (new means new, used, refurb...et al)?????

Or step up to an non-entry level (Mid or pro), OLDER, USED/Refurb DSLR that still has the lens focus motor built-in? And AND keep my lenses.

I will be "Running the numbers" so to speak to see what makes the most sense.

Stepping up might mean older non-movie DSLRs. Not a biggie.

Or, get the 24MP D3200 with lens kit and start my new lens collection anew.... choices.....

Stark Trek was good but without the freshness of the new actors hitting the mark as old characters, flaws were apparent. The plot was thin, minimal lip service to the usual Trek thoughtfulness, and the show pieces along with the old references were of the obvious sort for the most part. Not like the stunning opening of the first one. Still worth seeing for the character acting (except that gratuitous blonde) and senseless show pieces.

Kushner wrote the screenplay, and the story was based on Goodwin's research.

And I'd recommend looking up her appearances on the Daily Show and/or Colbert. A friend of mine met her, and said she is a blast in person.

Watched Lincoln last night. Loved the dialogue. More like some tragic play.
He really was made up to look like what I think Lincoln would look.
Not at all the story I thought it would be. Spader was good. TLJ was just TLJ, imo.
If it were told like LOTRs, there'd be a lot more drama in the movement of people, and not the dialogue whilst standing still.
No action. His youngest looked like Damien from the original Omen in his last screaming scene.
Did not make anyone but US Grant out to seem like a guy that has no qualms about his place/role/next step. (like that actor, too).
Overall I walked away liking the the dialogue, makeup/wardrobe. A few of the dialects/accents were strange. I suspect many non-native-AMERICAN-English speakers faking 19th century American English speakers is the root cause. (aka Brits playing USAmericans....again)
This concludes a week of co-workers discussions on how the CSA did not surrender and they/might be considered an occupied country.
The prices right now have nothing to do with cost factors. Oil prices have remained essentially flat. This is a somewhat more sinister situation.

Remember the Enron scam where traders would order power plants to shut down just so it would trigger a price increase? Well, two separate refineries that serve this area suddenly decided to shut down for maintenance.

True. And I should have thought more carefully about how I phrased things. I wasn't actually thinking of comparisons to other countries so much as what the price might be if the costs of "policing the Gulf of Arabia" were included. Things are definitely complex, and you can't completely separate out the individual costs.

My point is the cost to the US is something that benefits many countries - some more so than the US - yet they often have higher gas prices, even though we're paying for the patrols. Thus, how could anyone say that our gas is cheaper than other countries (subsidized) because we aren't accounting for the cost of our patrols, when nobody else is either?

Ideal? I think that's impossible to say. There are all these noises about us moving to a freelance society, but as a general trend, I find it difficult to determine if that's a cause or effect. The average tenure is definitely dropping.

Yes and no. While the link certainly isn't as direct as I was suggesting - and is certainly more complex as you note - maintaining those sea lanes for oil (not to mention all the goods from China etc.) comes from general taxation funds, not from taxes targeted at the industries which benefit. In that sense, there is a subsidy. Of course, one could argue that that's a worthwhile price for not re-creating some modern East India Company.
