Ideal? I think that's impossible to say. There are all these noises about us moving to a freelance society, but as a general trend, I find it difficult to determine if that's a cause or effect. The average tenure is definitely dropping.

I am coming up on 7 years. Our company portal actually shows us our percentile... I have been with the company longer than 80.45% of the rest of the employees.

Do you guys think it better, more desirable to be nimble and be able to change jobs?
Or do you think staying with an employer as long as possible is desirable?
I hear different takes on this.
But my company just put up a page of our most senior IT folks. a dozen or two on either side of 30 years service.
My 20 years in a meeting this week was middle of the road. (We stood up and sat down with each successive year of service in this meeting)
And I noted on a ride down in an elevator that I was the 'new kid'; everyone else in the elevator had more seniority than me.
One of my good friend/coworkers has only ever worked at our employer, for some 25 years now I think.
But, at one time my goal was to never stay at a place longer than two years. Kids kind of change/d that for me. But I wish I COULD have changed more frequently.

Well, after just getting settled in (less than 9 months) I got "the call" today... the company I'm working for is in dire financial straits. The fat lady hasn't sung yet, but she's just offstage awaiting her cue.

So starts the hunt anew... at least I officially have current iOS in the mix this time.

For now my house is my oyster.

I need to see if I can do my job effectively via a tethered internet connection through my phone, though. If so, I may spend some time working from my dad's cabin.

For now, I'm just reading a bunch of documentation, trying to get up to speed on this new project.

The last two years have been a roller coaster for me employment-wise.

I was supposed to get laid off at the end of June 2011. I was able to secure a new role at the last minute (almost literally... it was 45 minutes before my exit interview was supposed to happen).

I was back on the chopping block this year with a scheduled end-date of February 28th. Again, I managed to secure a new (albeit short-term) role.

That new role is supposed to end this Friday. Today I am happy to report that I have secured another new role. This one is long-term so I hope to avoid another layoff scenario for quite a while.

It does seem strange that simply turning down a job offer from a company would cause one to be blacklisted - it's simply a business decision after all.

Well, there's this, too. I've been avoiding reading it because I might learn a bit too much, or get paranoid about my job prospects in kind of this small community.

And I'm totally stressing about an article that I'm having the hardest time writing (maaaaaybe a few lines a day). For free. To raise my profile in an attempt to seem like I've "done something interesting", which is important in being employable.

As to overtime for "non labor", thorny issue overall, but bonuses, comp time, and other elements are "supposed" to make up for the hours worked vs hours paid discrepancy, but here we are back to corporations as assholes, labor vs capital and all. You can see the "oh that doesn't really matter anymore" attitude of the companies in the recent "efficiency surveys" that show that even during the layoff splurge, productivity is going up, reinforcing the upper management idea that squeezing existing professionals is both acceptable and profitable.

you mean, overtime for exempt/salaried people?
I come from very very blue collar family. The concept of working even one hour for free (err, as part of the "TEAM") is very foreign.
Heck, when I was salaried in Chicago, not ONLY did they pay for overtime, they even had 'shift differentials'. Like 1.3 times pay for overtime.
When one looks at that recent wealth distribution video, it's hard to justify a we versus them at the normal, working man (exempt or non) level... http://bit.ly/11uyVEf ---- off topic.....

Another lovely overnight of system changes.
I would vote, and likely non-GOP, to change labor laws for if you work an hour, you get paid for an hour. I sometimes feel like I make $6/hr on the weeks that I get no sleep.
Again - glad to be employed - not complaining ( <--- said in robot/zombie voice )
