I should point out that not all AMOLED screens are PenTile. Samsung's Galaxy S II line used "Super AMOLED Plus" screens. The "Plus" indicates a standard RGB pixel layout. This is as good as it gets for brightness and contrast. Blacks are truly black and everything is very sharp.

I'm really interested in seeing the new Galaxy Note II close-up. The AMOLED display on that device is not classified as a "Plus" model but it doesn't use the regular PenTile matrix either. Each pixel includes a Red, Green and Blue subpixel but they aren't arranged as 3 parallel stripes like an ordinary RGB display. It's possible this could introduce its own artifacts but then again, it might not.

It does. I also returned it a couple of days ago.

PenTile wasn't as big of a problem at that pixel density but it still bothered me. The main reason I returned it was because I wanted to back out of the 2 year contract extension I signed when I got it. I learned that T-Mobile has implemented a new data roaming policy that makes their service almost completely useless to me. They cap users at 100MB of roaming data per month. T-Mobile doesn't have their own towers up by the family cabin so I'm always roaming when I'm up there. One 3-day weekend and I would easily consume my entire month's quota.

My only real option is AT&T at this point. Luckily, AT&T officially announced the new HTC One X+ today which is a big spec-bump from the current HTC One X. If you get a chance, you should look at one of those in a store. The display is, hands down, the absolute best screen ever on a phone.

Like I said earlier, some people don't seem to have a problem with PenTile and swear they don't know what I'm talking about when I try to describe the artifacts that I see when using one. Luckily, there is a fantastic image in The Verge's review of the original HTC One X that shows it perfectly:

http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/2/2919202/htc-one-x-review

Scroll down to the part of the review labeled "Display" and look at the close-up of the GMail icon. The right half of the image is from the HTC One S and that is how my eyes see the PenTile display. Areas that are supposed to be white look greyish with fuzzy edges and areas that are supposed to be red have huge gaps between the pixels when I look at it.

Well, I got one on opening day. I hadn't planed on it yet, but a local station wanted me to demo it on air. And my work helped me get it.
Overall, I like it a lot. It's a big improvement over my iPhone 4. Very light. Very thin. Very fast.
Yes, the new connector is a pain, but just because I have so many dock cables. I'm traveling with the iPhone (hello Philly) and an iPad. It's annoying to have two different cables to keep track off, but that's no different from before I had an iPhone.

I got a Galaxy S III today.

It's really nice except for all of Samsung's customizations. Almost all Android phone manufacturers feel the need to rub their junk all over the UI in order to "differentiate" their products. Occasionally, one or two of their features are a good idea but the vast majority of the changes just mess things up.

This is why I generally run a third party ROM like CyanogenMod. It's like the difference between running a Windows system with all of the preinstalled bloatware and OEM toolbars versus a clean Windows install.

From the Sept 13 article JW quoted:

Quote

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the Lightning adapter would not support audio out. The adapter will not support iPod controls, but will support audio.

Apparently there IS digital audio out, but no longer analogue audio (some devices relied on the analogue signal) AND you can't remote control the IPhone/iPod with the new connector.

And from the Apple store page: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter#overview

Quote

This adapter lets you connect devices with a Lightning connector to many of your 30-pin accessories.* Support for analog audio output, USB audio, as well as syncing and charging. Video output not supported.

*Some 30-pin accessories are not supported.

So, according to Apple there IS analogue audio, USB (I assume therefore digital) audio, syncing and charging but NOT video out and NOT access to iPod/iPhone controls.

Still a backward step, especially the last point. The big grey area is what on earth "some 30-pin accessories are not supported" means.
