The final was a horrible match. For all the beauty spain possesses in the quick passing game, most of their games were tight affairs with the only scoring in the final 10 or 15 minutes. The two ugliest matches this week were Spain vs. Germany and Spain vs. Netherlands. You can say that both Germany and Netherlands were not up to the task, and Spain was the better team in both, but Spain had trouble scoring all tournament even after being put in one of the easiest group stages. Germany and Netherlands displayed cynical play, no doubt, but if Spain could finish, I think the games would have been more exciting. For all of their technical skill, the end product was still missing something. I was desperately hoping for an early goal, because that would have opened up things on both sides.

Spain definitely deserved this win, but spare me the talk on the Spanish style of play. They looked more like Italy this tournament.

We're used to see fantastic football, I heard a commentator say; if 'we' had won, it would have been an award for a lifetime achievement prize. Not for this tournament, as they were playing quite horribly, but for playing beautiful football for the past 36 years without winning anything.

JW, shame you didn't see the third place game on Saturday. It was a lot of fun--wide open play, five goals, the lead changing hands a couple of times, some exquisite skill on display, a last-second near miss by Uruguay (it was, literally, the last kick of the game). It had everything you'd want in a soccer match, except actual consequence.

I'll second Tony's commiserations, tliet. Despite my negative comments above, I was pulling for the Netherlands.

It's possible when the Dutch plan to stifle the Spanish attack was basically to kick the hell out of any Spaniard with the ball (Van Bommel acknowledged the plan in pre-match interviews). True, the Spanish players did go down awfully easily under contact at times, but still there was a hell of a lot of contact--and de Jong really should have been sent off for his first-half kick to Alonso's chest.

Ironically, it was a moment of honest play that arguably hurt the Netherlands the most: in the 81st minute, Robben, clear in on goal, was clearly tugged from behind by Puyol. Players routinely fall to the ground under far less contact--Iniesta certainly did on the play that resulted in Heitinga's second yellow card. And had Robben gone down, it would have been a free kick just outside the Spanish penalty area, and should have been a red card on Puyol as well (because Puyol was the last defender other than the keeper on a clear scoring opportunity). Robben, to his credit, tried to finish the play, but Puyol's tug slowed him enough to allow Casillas to come out and prevent a shot.

It wasn't pretty, but I still found it compelling.
