Yeah, e-ink would still be a huge power win. The power required to change the display is still very little compared to constantly powering an LCD. The bigger problem is just the price of e-ink - the display units alone for those cost about $3. I presume b/w LCDs cost less, and are probably more understood by engineers.

Imagine - you can have all sorts of interesting real-time markets enabled by dynamic price labels. The last item on the shelf costs more, especially factoring in when the next shipment is. I wonder how much Amazon prices change on average - I assume they don't do it more just because it pisses people off.

Whole Foods has the LCD price tags too. They drive me crazy. The viewing angle is super-narrow so it's impossible to quickly read prices from a distance and comparison-shop (I assume they love this), and tags near the floor have to be viewed with your head practically resting on the floor (really, not exaggerating). And they're frequently entirely out of order (a single tag's battery runs out or a whole aisle blows out somehow), so to even know the price of a thing you might buy requires asking a person for help. Not that I don't see the advantage if they can make it work, but as it is it's ridiculously less functional than simple paper tags. I'm actually surprised that some city or state hasn't already taken them to court over these, considering the regulations about legible and clear grocery price displays.

Why is everyone calling this a 7-inch iPad? If this (7.85") is seven inches, then the larger iPad (9.7") ought to be called a nine-inch iPad. But no one calls it that. I know there are other 7-inch tablets out there. But the iPad mini is bigger than them.

Agree with James that the weight difference is significant. I've only spent a few minutes with a mini at the local Apple Store, but was immediately struck by how much lighter it was. And being smacked in the nose by my iPad 3 as I fell asleep while reading in bed last night gave me a pointed reminer that smaller and lighter can definitely be better.

Yes, I'd be really tempted to trade in my iPad 3 for a Mini, but I'm one of those assholes who's holding out for a retina version. I really think I'd use the smaller-sized one more and possibly even overlook the gloss issues and read books on it more.

I'm liking the iPad mini a lot. I've got a iPad 3 as well, (work) and I though i'd dislike the mini due to the lack of the retina display, but I find myself grabing much more often than the full sized one.
Before the iPad mini was announced, I was imagining it at double DIN sized for autos and other uses. Now I see it, in addition to all the stated uses, as a killer appliance for the service industry, *particularly* with the "no new software needed" design.
Both the lower price point (compared to the 3/4 gen) and the smaller size (compared to the iPad 2) make it a *really* compelling device for small businesses.
