If... IF... they can pair a fitness detector (though I think an accelerometer offers only trivial data) and location via a paired iOS device, you could get something, though that wouldn't offer the base types of data Nike+ or FitBit offer. I don't think you could eke out enough battery to have location services (even w/ ping up to a satellite or cell data network) in just the watch. There's an upcoming thing I have seen that makes me say this (not from Apple).
Can't imagine that we wouldn't have heard about hires or patents regarding fitness hardware (detection, transmitting) or software (visualization, partnering with major players). It's a tough user problem to do right, though many companies such as Strava and FitBit would be tough to break.

ddt

Same was said for Creative and MP3 players at the time too... the main reason I throw the fitness stuff (probably as a BTLE peripheral actually, implemented locally with the accelerometer for some features) is that _synthesis_ is really what Apple does best.

If it really is just a timepiece, it will have style but that's not enough. What will Apple synthesize into the device that is going on your wrist? Don't forget, assuming Apple is really going for an official wearable, they'll be competing with the Google Glass mindshare as well, so don't expect it to just tell time, and I think *just* a remote display for another device you carry would be Cook's Cube. Remember RCKR? When the iPhone came out, you didn't need to carry an iPod anymore if you had the phone.

What will you be able to eliminate if you're wearing an (ugh) iWatch?

Yeah, I think it's really the iPhone Mini. Maybe there's also a Bluetooth/WiFi-only version that works as a peripheral for a full-size iPhone, but that's not what most people will buy it for. Instead of a pocket-filling phone, maybe you take only the wrist version when you're travelling light and pack an iPad when you want to mess with apps or do any real reading.

Here are some of the possibilities occurring to me these days:

* remote display for important notices from your actual phone
* health sensors (Mio has a wrist heart rate monitor that is apparently a breakthrough due to marrying blood flow sensing with accelerometer data, and health sensing devices are exploding)
* the advent of NFC or Bluetooth/wireless payment functions in Apple devices?
* kinetic/solar recharging?

Well, that didn't take long. I've already seen a couple of articles saying that this is a PR move, or just a drop in Apple's total operations budget. Maybe so. I hope that more multinationals make such PR moves.

Maybe they will even design the products so they can be assembled more easily. The existing designs seem very difficult to assemble, does it really have to be that hard? (yes, yes, go ahead w "hard" allusions)

Looks like it's getting official; more Apple manufacturing is coming home:

"It's not known well that the engine for the iPhone and iPad is made in the U.S., and many of these are also exported-the engine, the processor. The glass is made in Kentucky. And next year we are going to bring some production to the U.S. on the Mac. We've been working on this for a long time, and we were getting closer to it. It will happen in 2013. We're really proud of it. We could have quickly maybe done just assembly, but it's broader because we wanted to do something more substantial. So we'll literally invest over $100 million. This doesn't mean that Apple will do it ourselves, but we'll be working with people, and we'll be investing our money."
