Did I mention that Mud was great? It was. Usually McConaughey overpowers with his McConaugheyness, but here, tuned, it fit the role like a glove and the actor disappeared.

Stark Trek was good but without the freshness of the new actors hitting the mark as old characters, flaws were apparent. The plot was thin, minimal lip service to the usual Trek thoughtfulness, and the show pieces along with the old references were of the obvious sort for the most part. Not like the stunning opening of the first one. Still worth seeing for the character acting (except that gratuitous blonde) and senseless show pieces.

Bill, if you liked the writing (I cannot watch Spielberg movies, I admit), you can check out Tony Kushner's famous "Angels in America", and read Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals". Kushner wrote the screenplay, and the story was based on Goodwin's research.

And I'd recommend looking up her appearances on the Daily Show and/or Colbert. A friend of mine met her, and said she is a blast in person.

Watched Lincoln last night. Loved the dialogue. More like some tragic play.
He really was made up to look like what I think Lincoln would look.
Not at all the story I thought it would be. Spader was good. TLJ was just TLJ, imo.
If it were told like LOTRs, there'd be a lot more drama in the movement of people, and not the dialogue whilst standing still.
No action. His youngest looked like Damien from the original Omen in his last screaming scene.
Did not make anyone but US Grant out to seem like a guy that has no qualms about his place/role/next step. (like that actor, too).
Overall I walked away liking the the dialogue, makeup/wardrobe. A few of the dialects/accents were strange. I suspect many non-native-AMERICAN-English speakers faking 19th century American English speakers is the root cause. (aka Brits playing USAmericans....again)
This concludes a week of co-workers discussions on how the CSA did not surrender and they/might be considered an occupied country. So, the movie was apropos to this in timing.
Music was done by the Letters from Cleo people, I think. They also did the music for the Generation O cartoon.

Damn, Rachel Leigh Cook is cute.

The movie also had Parker Posey and Alan Cumming. How, HOW can that be wrong? And it's got about the largest anti-consumerist satirical message since "They Live".

You know, the drama and pseudo-intrigue doesn't grab me, but the actors do. For instance, this dialog is standard-issue:

"That's more than I pay you in a year."
"He's a squire. You don't pay him anything."
"Then it's MUCH more than I pay him in a year."

But I could watch Dinklage & co. be droll for hours.

Whoo Hoo! 0.6kb with >600 Seeds and >4000 peers. Granted it is still only 7:45 PM my time but still...

Quote
Tony Leggett
Hmmm...

There were a lot of comments about delays between the GOT episode airing in the US and when it becomes available on iTunes Australia. I'd signed up for the season pass when the first episode was already available. The 2nd episode wasn't available last night when the torrents started to go up - however for the first 6-12 hours after the latest GOT torrent goes up there's absolute gridlock because the ratio of seeders/leachers is way out of whack - the download was going to take half the night...

Wake up the following morning and iTunes pops up with a little "you have a new GOT episode, would you like to download?"

"You bet your happy arse I do" -- click -- and ten minutes later I'm watching Theon finally getting his just desserts...

So, all in all, almost as quick as torrenting and better quality. I think that's worthy of a swiffie.

All the syndicated shows were distributed on vinyl at one point, even American Top 40. The royal bitch was having turntables that were a nudge slow (small-market radio at its finest). That screwed up getting 60 minutes of show in 60 minutes.

That reminds me, I've plopped a few stories/pictures (Multi Media, natch) from waaaay back in the day on my Facebook timeline. Come on down...

Back in the late 80s I was a big fan of the Dr. Demento Show. I would stay up late every Sunday night to hear it and would frequently record it as well.

There are a few episodes of the show that I remember very well, having practically worn out the tapes they were recorded on. I've lost all of those tapes over the years, unfortunately, but recently discovered a way to get those memories back...

During its "golden era" the Dr. Demento Show was distributed by the Westwood One Radio Network. Each two hour show was shipped via UPS to the affiliate stations on two vinyl LPs. These even included the commercials.

People have started to sell these on eBay and I just bought a few. I picked up three episodes that I remember having recorded on tape 25 years ago. They arrived today and I just finished recording the first of them into MP3 format. I'm probably going to re-record it once I get a better turntable and a good disc cleaner but at least for now I have the ability to re-experience something I loved when I was 13 years old.
